Oxytocin ODT (Each)

200 IU

Oxytocin ODT (Orally Disintegrating Tablet) is a medication used primarily to support labor and delivery or to help control postpartum bleeding. It mimics the natural hormone oxytocin produced by the body, which plays a key role in uterine contractions. This form of oxytocin is designed to dissolve quickly in the mouth without the need for water, making it convenient for use when timely administration is required under medical supervision.

Oxytocin ODT works by binding to specific receptors in the uterus, stimulating smooth muscle contractions. These contractions help initiate or strengthen labor during childbirth. Additionally, oxytocin promotes the release of milk from the breast glands by triggering the contraction of myoepithelial cells around the alveoli. The combined effect on the uterus and mammary glands makes it useful for both labor induction and post-delivery recovery.

This medication should not be used in cases where vaginal delivery is not possible, such as placenta previa, certain fetal abnormalities, or when uterine rupture is a risk. It should also be avoided in patients with significant cardiovascular disease or hypersensitivity to oxytocin. Careful evaluation is necessary before administration, especially in women with a history of difficult labor or previous cesarean sections. Continuous monitoring is essential to avoid excessive uterine contractions that could harm both mother and baby.

Oxytocin may interact with other drugs that affect the uterus or cardiovascular system. Combining it with prostaglandins, ergometrine, or other labor-inducing agents can increase the likelihood of overly strong contractions. It may also enhance the effects of antihypertensive medications or lead to imbalances when used alongside certain psychiatric treatments. Always consult a healthcare provider about all medications, supplements, or herbal products being taken before starting this therapy.

Common side effects include nausea, headache, and mild cramping. Some individuals may experience excessive uterine contractions, which can lead to fetal distress or uterine rupture if not properly monitored. Changes in blood pressure, flushing, or water retention may also occur. In rare cases, allergic reactions such as rash, itching, or swelling have been reported. Any unusual or severe symptoms should be immediately brought to medical attention.

Oxytocin is a hormone naturally present during pregnancy and plays a critical role in labor and breastfeeding. However, synthetic oxytocin should be used cautiously and only under medical supervision, especially in high doses or prolonged administration. During pregnancy, it is only prescribed when the benefits clearly outweigh the risks. While it may assist in milk ejection during breastfeeding, its medical use should be carefully supervised to avoid side effects in both mother and infant.

Store this medication at 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C) and away from heat, moisture and light. Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Throw away any unused medicine after the beyond-use date. Do not flush unused medications or pour down a sink or drain.
