Selenium is an essential mineral that may possess antioxidant properties. Selenium may play a role in various physiological functions, including immune system support, thyroid hormone metabolism and antioxidant defense mechanisms. Through these potential antioxidant properties, selenium may help reduce oxidative stress and protect cells from damage. Selenium is involved in the production of selenoproteins, which are important for regulating thyroid function and supporting a healthy immune response.[1]
Selenium supplementation may be recommended for individuals with selenium deficiency, which may occur in regions with low soil selenium levels or in populations with limited dietary intake of selenium-rich foods.[2] However, excessive selenium intake may lead to toxicity, resulting in symptoms such as hair loss, nail brittleness, gastrointestinal disturbances, and irritability.[3]
