Telmisartan is a prescription medication that may assist with high blood pressure (hypertension) and reduce the risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes.[1] It belongs to a class of drugs known as angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs), which work by blocking the action of angiotensin II, a hormone that causes blood vessels to constrict.[1][2] By inhibiting this hormone, telmisartan may help relax and widen blood vessels, leading to lower blood pressure and improved blood flow.[1] This mechanism may not only help manage hypertension but also may reduce the strain on the heart and arteries, thereby assisting in lowering the risk of developing heart disease and stroke.[2] Telmisartan may also help protect the kidneys from damage due to diabetes.[1]
