Oxandrolone is a synthetic testosterone derivative; its anabolic potential may be greater than its androgenic potential due to the deletion of the methyl group from the C-19 position.[1] Oxandrolone may help offset the protein catabolism associated with prolonged administration of corticosteroids.[1] It may also assist with the relief of bone pain that may be associated with osteoporosis.[1] Consumption of adequate protein and calories is required for these potential anabolic effects.[1]

Oxandrolone may help promote weight gain after burns or trauma and in certain disease states such as COPD and AIDS, but these effects on lean body mass may be lost after therapy is discontinued.[1] Side effects may include nausea, headache, hair loss, or acne. Serious side effects may include liver disease or toxicity, heart disease, heart attack, or stroke.[1][2] Talk to your healthcare provider about potential side effects and risks.
