Topiramate is a prescription medication that may help with epilepsy and migraine prevention.[1] As an anticonvulsant, topiramate works by stabilizing electrical activity in the brain, which helps to reduce the frequency and severity of seizures.[2][3] It may assist with both partial-onset and generalized seizures, including tonic-clonic seizures and seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a severe form of childhood epilepsy.[1]
In addition to antiepileptic properties, topiramate may also assist with migraine prevention.[4] The exact mechanism by which topiramate may assist with migraine prevention is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve the modulation of neurotransmitters and the inhibition of certain types of neuronal activity that can trigger migraines.[1]
