Valacyclovir is an antiviral medication that may help with infections caused by certain types of viruses. It may assist with the treatment of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections, including genital herpes and cold sores. Valacyclovir may also assist with shingles, which is caused by the varicella-zoster virus.[1]
Valacyclovir may also assist with outbreaks of genital herpes in patients who have frequent recurrences, helping reduce the severity and duration of symptoms. Additionally, it may help with prevention of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in high-risk patients, such as those who have undergone organ transplants.[1]
Valacyclovir works by converting into acyclovir in the body, which then inhibits the viral DNA polymerase enzyme, preventing the virus from multiplying and spreading.[1]
This action may help reduce the symptoms of viral infections and promote faster healing of sores. The medication may cause side effects including headache, nausea, and abdominal pain, as well as more serious effects.[1] While taking valacyclovir, it is important to keep all scheduled appointments with your doctor and laboratory. Your doctor may order specific lab tests to monitor how you are responding to valacyclovir.[1]
